Getting older can and should be enjoyable! We can make choices today for today and tomorrow. Living in a heart-healthy way contributes to health in all aspects of life. The tips you find here are the same ones that you’ve read, heard somewhere, told by an aunt or uncle, or seen in that newsletter sitting in your inbox.
Heart Health Aging Tips for Teens:
Let's help you set yourself up for a strong and healthy heart as you age!
Stay Active - Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day (playing sports, and helping grandma carry groceries up the stairs also counts!)
Don’t Smoke - Avoid smoking or vaping, this can harm your heart and blood vessels!
Eat Smart - Load your plate up with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins, a balanced diet supports overall wellbeing.
Heart Health Aging Tips for Older Adults:
Evidence-based strategies to improve heart health!
Stay Socially Connected - Maintaining social connections can positively impact heart health, spending time with loved ones, engaging in community activities, or participating in group exercises can all promote health!
Prioritize Quality Sleep - Adequate sleep is vital for heart health, Aim for 7-9 hours each night to help regulate blood pressure and support cardiovascular functioning.
Limit Sedentary Behavior - Reducing sedentary activities such as prolonged TV watching, and incorporating light movement into daily routines like going on walks, folding laundry, and tidying up, can all contribute to maintaining a healthy body weight and contribute to a higher quality of life as you age.
All of the above are actually great tips for everybody regardless of age!
Did you know that high-quality olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats and polyphenols, which have been shown to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and inflammation, both key factors in heart disease prevention? Regular consumption has been linked to improved blood vessel function and lower risk of cardiovascular events, making it a cornerstone of heart-healthy diets like the Mediterranean diet.
Did you know that mindfulness practices are now being studied as tools to support heart health?
❣ Simply defined, mindfulness means having an awareness of our inner thoughts and feelings, our surroundings, and paying attention.
Simple Mindfulness Practices:
Chewing food slowly, savoring the taste of your meal, taking the time to think about what we’re grateful for, intentionally slowing down to observe the world around us while taking deep breaths, and sitting in meditation are ways to tap into mindfulness as a means of stress reduction. Reducing stress is good for the heart.
It’s less about isolating single things that drive healthful outcomes and more about thoughtfully
curating a life that centers your heart and the practices that support its long-term health.
We hope you feel inspired to develop your own heart-healthy practices that harmoniously support you and by extension your community.
